When you have two diseases at the same time: Chronic Sinusitis Care
3/12/20: Long before GBM I have had a life time struggle with Chronic Sinusitis. When I have a flair up during chemo treatments, I am so miserable. Thankfully though after so many years of this struggle I finally have a method caring for my sinuses that works and I went more than a year without a sinus infection, so I thought I would share, particularly for the sinus sufferers.:
Essential Oils: after more than a year of a friend raving about the DoTerra breathe oil, I put it and a diffuser on my Christmas list, and was pleasantly surprised how well it worked. At bed time I fill the diffuser to the water line, then add 10-15 drops (Non sinus sufferers only use 5-7 drops) into the diffuser and let it run at night. The bonus is it helps my husband with snoring! I use it anytime anyone in the family has a cold, allergies, sinus issues, etc. I'm really amazed how it helps to open everything up. FYI, the diffuser you use really makes a difference. DoTerra brand is really the best, but it only runs for 4 hours max. I got an 8 hour diffuser that isn't nearly as good, but its better than nothing after the doterra diffuser shuts off.we only run them both at the same time when my husband and I are both congested. we each have one on our night stands.
Nasal Irrigation: I could only do this after sinus surgery. prior nothing would drain and it was painful.
- In a nelli bottle with distilled water I add the saline that comes with it
- microwave for 10 seconds to warm since microwaves vary test temp on arm before first use
- open 1 capsule of budesonide .6mg (Prescription) - this stops after infection is stopped
- open 1 capsule of gentamicin 20 mg(Prescription), adding them to the bottle
- I add alkolol based on the bottle recommendations.

- Say the word Kaaaaay as you squeeze the bottle. This closes off the tubes that drain into your ears, preventing secondary issues
DO NOT DRAIN for 30 Minutes: After you squeeze the solution in your nose, Stay upright without doing anything to let the solution drain out. This allows the solution to drain down into the lower sinuses and break up whatever is congested in there too. Be prepared for post nasal drip, you will want to spit that right out. After 30 minutes lean at a sharp angle over the sink or tub to drain, blowing your nose (While still leaning over) when it appears that drainage has stopped. You will be surprised what was in there, and not being removed from the one and done rinse you did previously.
Frequency:
If I do that 2-3 times a day as soon as a flair up starts, I can usually nip it in the bud without it turning into a sinus infection. I have gone more than a year without a sinus infection by doing this. These medications were fda approved as a nasal rinse last year some time. In my area I can only get them mail order from a special pharmacy.
Once under control, I can relax the frequency to 1-2 times a day.
UPDATE FEB 2021: There is a new nasal spray available, which my DR prescribes when Flonase fails, and I NEVER felt so open before! I only took my first dose yesterday and I am amazed! This is a game changer!
The top part goes in your nose (As far back as you can put it), the side piece goes in your mouth. Then you blow into the mouth piece as you squeeze from the bottom.
